Prenatal vitamins help a pregnant woman nourish the baby, by supplying nutrients. They can be used even if a woman is not pregnant, but no child will be benefited. Prenatal vitamins are still vitamins, after all. But it’s wise to ask for advice, because there is more than one kind of prenatal vitamins, and they have side-effects you should watch out for.
These are just vitamins, but the “prenatal” part is what people often get wrong. The vitamins are not just for the child, they also affect the mother, since she is the one who must process them. Add to that the hormonal changes every woman has, and you will discover some unpleasant prenatal vitamins side effects.
So, here are some prenatal vitamins side effects you should watch out for.
- Upset intestinal system. This can mean nausea, constipation, etc. It’s one of the most common prenatal vitamins side effects complaints. Iron is, according to some, to blame for causing these effects. Pregnant women are at risk for developing anemia (low amount of red blood cells) because they have more blood for the second little person. This means that they need iron, which helps prevent anemia, but an iron overdose is also a problem. If you have this problem, try to get iron-free vitamins or take them right after lunch.
- Headaches. This is one of the prenatal vitamins side effects you can mistake for something else, so be careful. Now copper is to blame. Headaches are pretty common in people with high amounts of copper in their bodies. Now, some women have more copper than others, it’s just nature, but the vitamins have more copper; which can result, in some women, in a mild copper overdose. This is what causes those headaches.
- Discoloration of Urine. This is maybe the only harmless side effect in this list of prenatal vitamins side effects. Women who take prenatal vitamins are consuming a lot of vitamins, but sometimes the body doesn’t use them all up. So the rest gets expelled through the urinary tract. The thing is, vitamin B-12 causes a change of the urine color, from orange to bright yellow. It’s usually harmless, so don’t freak out.
- Metallic Taste. This is, fortunately, temporary. Prenatal vitamins have a lot of minerals, too. And when taken before going to bed, it means that some minerals will still hang out in your mouth, giving you a metallic taste (like licking a coin). Some women are not used to taking vitamins of any kind so their bodies take a little longer to adjust to the new thing. But it’s mostly harmless, so don’t worry (too much).
- Allergic Reaction. The last item in this list is by far the most unlikely. Some women will have an allergic reaction to the vitamins. It’s very rare, but women seldom have this kind of bad luck. The reaction comes with rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, and/or difficulty when breathing. If you have a severe allergic reaction, get help, vitamins take a long time to get out of the system.
